Relief Initiatives Announced by Maharashtra Government

The Maharashtra government has initiated relief efforts in regions affected by flooding, which include financial assistance for the families of deceased individuals, compensation for losses in crops and livestock, and support for damaged homes, officials reported on Thursday.

According to the official announcement, families of those who lost their lives in the floods will receive a financial aid of ₹400,000. Compensation has also been set for livestock losses.

For goats, sheep, or pigs, a relief amount of ₹4,000 per animal will be provided. Each family can claim compensation for up to three large animals and 30 small animals.

Poultry farmers will receive ₹100 per chicken, with a maximum limit of ₹10,000 per family.

Families whose homes have been completely destroyed will receive ₹8,000 for temporary shelters and ₹12,000 for fully collapsed permanent houses. Assistance of up to ₹3,000 will be available for damaged animal shelters.

The government has also announced relief for farmers whose crops have been adversely affected by the floods. They will receive ₹8,500 per hectare for rain-fed crops, ₹17,000 for irrigated crops, and ₹22,500 for perennial crops.

In cases where agricultural land has been rendered unusable due to flooding, ₹18,000 per hectare will be provided for land that can be restored.

This announcement comes amid widespread devastation caused by heavy rainfall in the state. Since September 20, at least nine fatalities have been reported in the Marathwada region, with over 30,000 hectares of crops damaged.

According to the government, continuous rainfall has affected 31 districts in the state this month. So far, 5 million hectares of agricultural land and crops have been impacted. The government has released ₹2,215 crores from the state disaster relief fund and is seeking additional financial assistance from the central government.
